Planetary scientist claim that Mars suffered a giant impact

Francis Nimmo, planetary scientist of the University of California-Santa Cruz predicted that the shape of mars that is a smooth northern plain and speckled southern highland was acquired by the planet after it suffered a giant impact from an astrological body.

It is assumed that the shape was caused because of an asteroid that had a size of Alaska and it slammed into Mars about 4.4 billion years ago. Other scientists said that massive volcano must have caused the shape changes.
